Duo Di Uno

The Problem.

The project set was to design a chair and desk for the context of use in a rural school environment within the regional precinct of Papua New Guinea (PNG). It was designed in Australia by team of designers to cater the requirements set forth by our stakeholder, Queensland Department of Agriculture and Fisheries (DAF) with collaboration of the local Papua New Guinea (PNG) community.

These furniture units are specifically designed for use by school children with the age range of 5 to 8-year-olds in PNG local elementary school with the use of waste timber from timber manufacturing in the forestry industries based in PNG. The other secondary aim is to develop the skills and furniture making industry amongst the locals. The furniture has suite the rural environment where they are durable, easy to manufacture and sustainable to the community. There are schools without proper flooring and furniture for the students to use while studying.

“Duo Di Uno is an Adaptable Furniture that is both a Desk & Chair for Children in Rural Papua New Guinea.”

The Solution.

As a team, BRUT Design decided to approach the design problem and sustainability aspect with a concept of designing a single piece of furniture that can be arranged in multiples configurations for school and community purposes. The Duo Di Uno furniture can be arranged into a long bench, low table, etc. In the event of any of the furniture getting damaged, there would not be a need to rush to repair it as 2 children can share a seat which allows the students to continue on with classes. For ease of use and adaptability we designed this product as dual function, where you can flip it down and its a chair or flip it up and its a table.

Final Design.

The texture of the final unit is raw but comfortable to touch. All edges are sanded to remove all sharp and splintering hazards that may cause harm to the users. The combination of the timbers presents a colourful array of the native timbers on offer from factory and in turn create an aesthetic and unique design.

Flat Pack.

Duo Di Uno’s furniture have been pre-assembled to enable for easy usage once it reaches the community. The material has been optimised to create a design that will use majority of the material with minimal waste.

Assembly.

There is no need for a part assembly and minimal instructions for bringing the chair and desk together, just flip it! It was through pre-fabrication that the time and cost requirements of the Duo Di Uni furniture were cut to a level where it is more than acceptable for the community.
